From Stage to Strategy: BOLD Dance Competition

From Stage to Strategy: How BOLD Dance Competition Became a Blueprint for Exceptional Event Management

When I founded BOLD Dance Competition, my vision was simple: create a space where dancers have a professional experience and feel seen, parents feel informed, and studio directors feel supported. What began as a passion project quickly grew into a multi-day, multi-city event hosting 800+ dancers and 3,000+ attendees per day.

But behind every polished pirouette is a playbook of detailed planning, tight logistics, and constant communication. And that’s where my dual role as Director and Events Manager shines.

More Than a Dance Competition

BOLD isn’t just a stage – it’s a full-scale experience. Each event is built from the ground up with intention and precision:

  • Budgeting & Financial Management: From venue fees to travel costs to merchandise sales, I manage comprehensive budgets across multiple events. This includes P&L analysis post-event to measure success and guide future planning.

  • Marketing & Branding: I oversee all event marketing – managing social media, producing branded mailers, maintaining and updating our website, and ensuring that each touchpoint reflects the energy and professionalism of BOLD.

  • Venue & Vendor Coordination: Partnering with third-party production teams, venue staff, and vendors, I ensure that every space we occupy is not only functional and safe, but exciting and inspiring for young performers.

  • On-Site Execution: Each event day includes simultaneous performances, adjudication, award ceremonies, merchandise sales, food service, and tech support. I coordinate all logistics, ensuring smooth check-ins, clear communication, and a supportive environment.

  • People Management: I lead a team of 15–20 staff members, many of whom are seasonal or part-time. I provide training, manage schedules, and oversee their performance before and during the event.

  • Technology & Innovation: We’ve invested in custom systems for registration, online adjudication, health compliance, and even action-shot photography. These tools allow us to streamline operations and elevate the participant experience.

  • Standing Out: All dance competitions sell action shot photography, but we changed the game at BOLD. Rather than selling it, we give it away. It costs money, but it’s less expensive than participation trophies or t-shirts and it keeps parents and studio owners coming back.

Communication is the Choreography

Whether it’s parents with questions, studio directors with schedules, or staff juggling logistics, I serve as the central point of communication. My goal is always to make everyone feel part of the team – because they are. This collaborative culture is what sets BOLD apart.

The Takeaway

Running BOLD Dance Competition is about more than music and movement. It’s about planning, leadership, and creating memorable experiences at scale. These same skills – from budgeting and marketing to team management and live event execution – translate directly into high-level event management across industries.

And while the spotlight might be on the dancers, the real magic happens behind the scenes.
